How to Apply for an IPO Online via ASBA & Net Banking
Applying for an initial public offering in India can be done either via broker UPI apps or directly through your bank's Net Banking ASBA facility. Understanding how ASBA works and how lottery allotment functions helps investors maximize their allotment chances.
Applying via Net Banking ASBA (SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis)
1. Log In to Net Banking: Access your internet banking portal (e.g. HDFC NetBanking > e-Services > IPO, or SBI > e-Services > Demat & ASBA Services).
2. Select the Active IPO: Choose the company from the list of ongoing issues and review the price band.
3. Provide Depository Details: Enter your 16-digit Demat Account number (DP ID + Client ID) from your CDSL or NSDL depository participant.
4. Select Cut-off Price & Submit: Always tick "Cut-off Price" for retail applications to ensure your bid matches the final price discovered during book-building.
The 1-Lot vs Multiple-Lot Strategy in Retail Category
One of the most widespread misconceptions among new investors is that applying for the maximum allowable retail limit (₹2,00,000, roughly 13 to 14 lots) increases the mathematical likelihood of winning an allotment in a popular IPO.
In reality, under SEBI guidelines for oversubscribed issues, allotment is determined strictly via a randomized computerized draw where each distinct PAN receives only 1 lot. Therefore, applying for 1 lot across accounts belonging to different family members (each with their own PAN) yields dramatically higher aggregate allotment probabilities.
Before applying, investors often monitor real-time market trends to check subscription velocity across institutional and retail categories.
Verifying Allotment & Unblocking Funds
Once the issue closes and the basis of allotment is finalized, you can confirm whether you were allotted shares by visiting the official registrar allotment tracking portal (such as Link Intime, KFintech, or Bigshare Services). If allotted, shares are credited directly to your demat account before listing morning.
